Shooting Challenge: 10x10 Grids (ends 9/30/13)
#FRESH IDEAS
Martin Gremm PRO
This is an experiment. Shooting Challenges will run in parallel to the normal batches at a much slower pace. Each Challenge will have a theme or other brief, and submissions are expected to be new material, not something from your archive. Shooting Challenges are curated, just like Batches.

To submit, please post a link in this thread. The link can point wherever you want. You do not have to upload your contribution to 1x.

Please do not put the image into the group gallery. If you do it will be considered for whatever batch is current at the time and become ineligible for the Shooting Challenge.

We will have to figure out a way to present the results. One option is to create a simple website, but there are probably ready-made solutions. Idea are welcome.

And finally, here is the Brief for this Challenge:

Go shoot 100 images in one hour, assemble them into a 10x10 grid of images, and post a link to the result here. This is only fun if you actually force yourself to work this fast, so please resist the temptation to raid the archive or to spread the shooting over several days. The last day to submit is September 30th.

Have fun and let me know if you have any questions.

Should be easy enough to build an action to do most of it. Action would probably stack all in one place, but selecting them and snapping them to a grid should be quite easy and quick manually.

if you use LR, go to print module set your paper size for example to 10x10 adjust rows to 10x10, no borders and print to jpeg. all you have to do is just pick and drag the photos to each squares. this will permit you to get a pattern going or any other creative layouts.

I don't have LR as other recommendations mention so what functionality would you use to snap them to a grid? I thought of selecting layers and using Distribute Horizontal Centers, while making sure that the leftmost and the rightmost little squares are flush to the left and right edge of the big square respectively, but maybe there is another way? I need more details :-)

Perfect! The author of this article only omits that you first need to go to Tools-> Configure Buttons and add the Collage button. It appears roughly in the middle of the bottom tray.

I don't have a secret sauce for assembling them. I have an action to resize and edit the component pictures. Then I just drag them to a larger PS file and arrange them to my liking. You can specify the grid size and turn on Snap To Grid in PS (and turn off all other snappings or you will get propagation of errors). Putting them in a grid takes less time than prepping the component pictures, so I never worried about streamlining it.

Here goes Martin, I'm cheating a bit has I took these two weeks ago and was in the process of creating a mozaic to represent my whale outing. The photos were all taken over a one hour period and it was a blast. the tales are use to identify the whales as its there finger print, the marking never change.

Nicely done, Marc! It is good that you included a few humps and whale noses to break things up. Do you have a closeup of a whale eye? I had one taken from 15 feet away, but it disappeared along with all my other film stuff at some point in the distant past.

As far as I am concerned, this falls within 90% of the 'rules' which is good enough for me, but I am looking forward to your new grid nevertheless.

I once shot 350 images for a grid in 90 minutes. That really doesn't leave much time to think. I found it liberating in some ways and I hope that people who take up this challenge will have the same experience.

I suppose I will be the first to submit an official entry.

I was out in the middle of the woods taking photos today and decided perhaps I would take a crack at this. Not necessarily to win this challenge but because I was intrigued by the idea. I suppose that's the point after-all.

At first I thought I would stand in one place and take a 360 panorama that would be viewed in a 10x10 grid but it was too boring. Then I realized "sh*t!" i'm late for my meeting at work...so I started running back to my car (roughly 2km away)...

As I was doing so I decided to take a few shots while I, and the camera, were moving. I've never done this before but I look down at the first couple of shots and realized the movement along with the wildlife created something beautiful!

So I began to take a few shots every second especially where it seemed interesting and at a few different angles with different camera movement. The result is my entry! And I love it.

I decided to go with B&W because the color made things blend too much and it had no mood. I wanted the feeling to be as if someone were being chased through the woods and this is their turbulent point of view.

I know others will be more creative and my post-processing skills (or lack-there-of) will get outclassed but I sure had fun! Thank you for creating this opportunity, Martin!

Martin, I also want to thank you for this fun challenge. This is not an official entry but ...I decided that I would need to practice the whole grid idea before even starting the challenge. I used Illustrator to make a grid and then copied it into Photoshop and made masks over the individual squares and also over the rows.

My practice grid is just 20 frames and the pictures are ones I had taken all together in about 15 minutes time. I really enjoyed the process for this and thought I would share it. As I said, I know this doesn't meet the shooting challenge so it is not an entry but I plan to do an official entry too.

What a fun grid, Paula! The best thing about dogs is that they have enough fun for themselves and everybody around them. This comes through clearly in your gird. (Our dog also loves these balls, albeit in a slightly different way: http://www.martingremmphotography.com/p188233358#h10adca8b)

Paula, Anna, et al., I don't want to constrain what people do for this challenge. Anything that vaguely satisfies the spirit of the idea works for me.

I am much more interested in creativity than in strict compliance with rules. So, yes, cut your pictures into many squares, leave the squares blank, make them unequal size, make them triangles, find some other way to present your collection of images, do whatever you want. The idea behind the challenges is to give you a nudge to explore an idea, NOT to confine you to a small box.

Martin - my dog Bullet uses the play balls exactly the same way as your dog in the video...so much fun to watch, especially with a little bit of ice crusted snow in the back yard to increase the speed but then, alas, after about 5-15 minutes he can no longer resist and he kills it :) the only ball that survives for his soccer playing is a small basketball. Thanks again for the great idea on the grids I am looking forward to tackling the 100 squares!

Marc and Anna - Thanks for the kind words of encouragement. Marc, your whale's tails actually gave me the idea of splitting the frames, I thought it really added interest when you did that so decided to give it a try...can't wait to see what everyone comes up with on this challenge!
Piet Flour PRO

I was thinking it was a very strange challenge without a lot of interest. Still, while I was waiting for my grandson at the basketball training I took my camera , went to an unknown place middle of the fields, and gave it a try.
I must say it is a wonderful experience to be forced to shoot a lot of good images at a place and a moment you don't really think to find much of interest. I'll need a lot of time to get everything in the necessary form, eliminate, and place them in order to get a viewable result.
This makes me think about the 10X10 ??? Well, the pictures will be really very very small, almost worthless to analise , even on 27 inch monitor ... because of the hight.

Wouldn't it be a good idea to allow other proportions ... or it there are no entries yet, to Rethink the format because on all screens there is always more width than hight !

So I would suggest to get images a little be bigger and worth to discover to go for
or allow 12 X 8 (96) or even better to get the 1/2 format 14 X 7 (98) fitting much better for every screen
Martin Gremm PRO
Piet, feel free to rearrange the images into other aspect ratios. As I said before, anything that vaguely follows the spirit of this idea will be considered. But consider that the grid is a geometric object as a whole as well as a set of individual pictures. The component pictures don't have to be terribly detailed for this to work.

I can guess this kind of presentation is not in the limits you had in mind ?
Just think instead of spreading the frames in space, I spread them in time. anyway, even if it doesn't fit the challenge, I found it z very interesting experience to be forced to search for image where I did not expect to find them, and the time pressure ads a lot to the experience.

Piet, just do whatever you want. As I said before, anything that vaguely fits the mandate will be considered. I am more interested in creative results than strict rules. The challenge is intended to get people thinking in a way that may be new to them. It is not intended to be a straightjacket.

I shot my material for potentially two grids, in two small countryside towns. I wrote a bit about this experience yesterday in the USA group. Here I have a few questions to ask and experience to share specifically about the grid format.

Questions, probably mostly to Martin or anyone who already did a grid, now or before.
- How do you determine the pixel size of the grid? So far I decided to go with the largest format available for printing for a reasonable price. This turned out to be 24x36 inches, I'd say not too big at all. Thus I settled for the 8x12 squares grid, potentially 3 inches per square when printed. That allows to actually see what's on each square even with some smaller details. Any other possible considerations for the grid size? Places that print it even bigger?
- Do you resize each little square before putting it on the grid? Is it to the maximum printed size? That is currently my inclination. Given decisions above that would make 3 inches, 240 px per inch, i.e. 720x720 px each square.

My experience so far:
- You need to shoot more than 100 pictures in one hour. Some pictures will be discarded, initially or when positioning on the grid.
- If shooting for squares, make sure what you want fits wholly in a square. Had to discard some pictures because edges of objects were too far left and too far right.
- Shot some funny ads - will not be able to read that in a grid.
- Some pictures were too busy or not contrasty enough to make any visual sense when small.

My experience in general was not liberating but still fun. I constantly worried if I shoot fast enough to feel free. It was fun because I needed to constantly find points of interest and fast, without too much walking and thus in a fairly confined area. That prompted me to see opportunities where normally I would not even look. That opened my eyes, ever so slightly.

Another time saver that I found while moving squares around in the grid of the same size as squares is to select Move, check Auto Select and the choose Layers. This way you simply move whatever you grab with your mouse.

I also made the grid longer by four columns than needed and used this area as a repository for extra squares and for squares that I remove from the grid temporarily.

Anna, my grids are 15x15 squares. I dimension the individual squares to be 2.4 inches on the side at 300dpi when processing them. That translates into a 36x36 inch grid. It is no problem to print them a little larger, say 42in on the side. The image files get to be pretty large even at 36in on the side. I had to upgrade my computer to handle that. Maybe it can now handle 42in on the side at 300dpi, but I don't think it is necessary for any practical purpose.

You definitely need to oversample, but in my experience you don't have to have something absolutely riveting in each square. I consider tonality and textures and much as content when assembling grids.

Thank you for taking up this challenge!

Sensor dust that I didn't feel like cloning out of nearly 100 shots!

My canvas in LR was 34" x 34", the individual cells are @3.1" each at 300dpi. The file is 68mb. I used LR because it was quick and easy and I didn't need to rearrange the photo's in the grid. Would be a pain to do that. I did a bit to get a certain line to look the way I wanted, but even that was trial and error. LR loads the selected shots into the grid from upper left to lower right. So if you want to change the arrangement you have to load your collection and change the order of the images there first. But you can select multi-view in the library or develop module and size your application window till you get 10 across and then you can rearrange them quite easily.

Here is my Grid - At The Harbor. I found this to be very challenging so I hope you like it. Taking the 100 pictures in an hour was the easy part. Arranging the individual pictures into one cohesive grid/image was the difficult part. I started out planning to do exactly as the challenge stated 10 rows of 10 images for a 10 x 10 grid. I found that I just couldn't push some of the pictures into that square box and be happy with it so I went a different route. I tried to give it an overall structure and stay true to the spirit of the challenge. My final result has about 85 images +/- my goal was to give the viewer the feeling of the motion of water along with the sights, textures and colors of the seashore. The pictures were taken all on the same day ( I actually took 300 in that hour!) at Falmouth Harbor, Massachusetts, USA.

Now, this was really a challenge for me....
First, thanks to Marc, for telling how I could do it in Lightroom, as I only work with this Software.
I never did something like this before, so there was some reluctance, as I am quite a free spirit, however, it seemed a nice experiment to me, to first "collect2 the images randomly and then put them together in some way which creates something new.
I also had the need to create something which still meets my style in some way, so I did it in b/w.

During my vacation in France recently, I visited the "bambouseraie", a huge bamboo garden, which also has a japanes garden in that area. A breathtakingly beautiful place on this earth:
http://www.bambouseraie.com/
Some bamboo there is more than 10 meter high and can grow about 1m (3feet) a day (!).

I noticed, that a lot of people left their marks on the bamboo stems, cutting with knives into it. Of course, the stems were growing higher and thicker, making these graffiti marks really special, they became with time a characteristic part of the bamboo a bit like skars which we have on our skins.

The grid consists of close-up images from this bamboo graffiti:

Thanks for this challenge, Martin, I learned a lot from this experiment, and I enjoyed it,

Really delicate with these shades pattern. And at the same time sort of 3D grid, again because of light/shadow combinations.

I will give it a shot as well.

"God moves in mysterious ways"

100 pictures capturing one view all together, an avenue leading to a church. The pictures are handheld and taken from the same spot. I wanted some degree of randomness, so I just moved a bit between every shot while trying to imagine the grid in front of me. It took less than two minutes, and it turned out quite different than I expected.........wich I sort of expected:-)
To me it worked better as one picture in B&W.
All pictures are shot with a nikon 300mm.

I've really enjoyed seeing how people have approached this challenge!

For most of this month we have been working on a house renovation project, so that is the subject of my grid.

An empty room, newly plastered. Not a lot to photograph, or so I thought at the outset.

However, the patterns which appeared as the fresh plaster dried out, plus a couple of paint rollers and a paint tray ready for action, the fixtures and fittings in the room and the first few strokes of new paint proved to be more than enough inspiration to fill a 10 x 10 grid.

I also liked the variation in colour which changed depending on where the subject was in relation to the window - the source of light - and whether the sun was shining or behind a cloud when the image was taken.

A fun variation on the exciting spectator activity of "watching paint dry" :-)

Thank you for your submissions! I am looking forward to reviewing them. You can still submit until midnight Pacific Time. I am looking forward to reviewing them.

I have created a tumblr for the results. You can see it here: http://shootingchalenges.tumblr.com. Before I put anything on there, I'd like to discuss how we want this to work.

My proposal is this:

- We make a post here with links to all submissions, singling out the winning entries.

- We make a similar post on the tumblr except that we can include the actual images in addition to the links. This would require giving me access to your image files so I can include them in the post.

I am not familiar with how tumblr works. If there is a better way to use it (or 1X for that matter), please tell me. If you have a better idea how to collect the result or run this, please let me know. Any other comments or suggestions, please let me know about those too!

Thank you for participating and for making this fun!

It is really a pleasure to see how every submission is so special, unique and very creative, I love this batch, all of them!
Linda, yours is superb, I can imagine that your renovation project is more fun for you if you create a whole series of these :-), always to be remembered by you...

It would be so nice to have them in one place, how Martin suggested in the beginning, a gallery in one zenfolio account would be one idea, or can Ralf do something, like he did before in another group?

While I wrote my question, you answered already, Martin.
Other than in Zenfolio putting them all together, it could be done like in this group:

that is what was done by Ralf in some way.

Ralf created a free account on PIXU and gave the login credentials to the admins of other groups. That' was largely it.

I am not sure that PIXU is useful for our purposes. It does not seem to support text. A blog-like setup is better for discussing results. That's the problem with Zenfolio too.

Are there objections to using tumblr, at least for now?

Both PIXU and Zenfolio have blogs and their blogs support both images and text. I think it's better if a 1X game stays affiliated with 1X (shall I elaborate on that?). PIXU seems to fit the bill, so this is why I prefer PIXU. PIXU blog looks like this: http://annagolitsyna.pixu.com/blog

Personally I see no apparent preference to keep the collection of odd shaped and sized images for review on something like PIXU. If PIXU actually had a stronger affiliation to 1x or reputation, maybe.

I say use what has the best tools to do the job. Perhaps better tools for organizing and annotating images will come to 1x Portfolios in the "new" iteration of such. But for now PIXU is rather limited.

I would say for this Topic, the biggest limitation to either might be file size. Some of the images are quite large and folks have expressed appreciation at looking at them at 100%.

After one hour of clicking I almost got Carpal Tunnel Syndrome on some of my fingers on my right hand ;-) This image is not necessarily what I expected after putting them together but I decided to post it here at the 11th hour... I guess while it gives an impression of some American suburban backyards but it looks perhaps too "nice"...

I created recently a Tumblr account, it supports both text & pictures and it's easy and practical, so I agree with this suggestion Martin !

At the end of each challenge, I think would be a good idea to gather together in one post all the links to images submitted in response, otherwise it takes time to scroll through the thread and maybe risk missing something.

I would also love to see all the images submitted to a challenge gathered together in one place, rather that have to follow links off-site to view individual images. However, I don't have accounts with tumblr, PIXU or zenfolio so unable to make any useful suggestions about these websites based on experience. I'm happy to let others do that...

Perhaps at the end of the year we should consider publishing the featured images for each challenge in a photobook, like the 52 x 52 Members Book: http://52by52.net/members-book/

Martin pointed us to Keith Johnson's work (http://www.keithjohnsonphotographs.com/galleries.php) which is both fascinating and inspiring. The grid challenge certainly opened my eyes to fresh approaches in photography. I feel moved to try some more!

Am also looking forward to the next challenge to take me out of my comfort zone

OK, let's close this challenge here. I'll post a new one in a week or so. The next one will be very different. I have been scheming.

I'll put together a summary post with all links later today or tomorrow.

What do people think about the book idea? I like it, but someone would have to volunteer to run that project.

Let's try tumblr for the results writeup this time. Maybe zenfolio next. This should give us a better idea of the pros and cons of the various options. I would really like to find a way to organize the submissions and present the results in a cohesive manner rather than cobbling it together by repurposing 1X features in ways they weren't intended to be used.

If your grid is located where I can't download it by clicking on it, please email it to:

so I have the file for the summary post.

Thanks for taking on this challenge!

Does anyone know how the blog under each of the groups in 1x works? I believe it is recently added. Maybe it is worth to take a look at it to see if it can serve the purpose of what have been considered here to better organize the curation?
